This song has NOTHING to do with "slavery", as some are suggesting. It is about hard-working inhabitants of the "banana republics" and "banana colonies", who were paid to harvest, bale, and load bananas. Their "tally" was important, because they were paid by the bunch. They worked at night for two reasons: first, the heat was far less brutal than during the day, and more importantly, the loaded banana boats usually started their journeys in the early morning.
